Byrd writes: "Landless people will burn the fallen trees and stumps, farm the land for survival, for two or three years until the soil is exhausted, and move on to another plot and do the same. The Bureau of Forestry has not yet found a way to prevent it."

He became a Christian by listing to DZAS when he was living in Malabon, Rizal a few years earlier. Mr. de Jesus is a respected aquaculturist, who, with his high income sponsors four PM radios for his less fortunate neighbors, including his own pastor (Felisberto Vasquez). Byrd notes: "On the wall is a blueprint of one of the Bangos (fish) farms."
