The community of Batia, Bocaue, Bulacan, a scant 14 miles north of Manila, was a center of Hukbalahap (communist guerilla) activity until a rebel commander heard the gospel on the radio and believed. The community ultimately became loyal to the Philippine government and a Christian community rose up.

A man adjusts his PM radio in a home. This is a good interior viewof a typical Philippine "Nipa" house. The main vertical beam is a tree trunk or branch lashed to bamboo cross-pieces. The walls consist of classic "swali", composed of thin bamboo strips. Swali is also used widely in rattan furniture.

The Batia story is one of the most well known in FEBC. This community, about 14 miles north of the city center of Manila, was Hukbalhapterritory after the War, until a local commander heard the gospel on DZAS and turned in his arms. This photo shows FEBC personnel paying a visit. (Max and Sara Atienza and staff other members. As the sign shows, the church was organized with the help of United Christian Action and the YMCA.

Wedding in Batia, Bulacan. The reason for the apprehensive expressions may be explained by the history of this community, which had recently been a Hukbalahap stronghold until Christian broadcasts from DZAS changed things. The picture was most likely taken by a foreigner. See also #1080, #748, #1692.

This remarkable Scripps-Howard article, appearing in an El Paso newspaper, outlines fairly the controversy surrounding "Miltant Liberty" as developed by FEBC co-founder John Broger, who filled dual roles as FEBC president and Pentagon consultant until 1960 when Robert Bowman assumed the presidency. In the beginning days of FEBC there was some controversy internally as to the purposes of FEBC and whether they should, in addition to the gospel message, include the promotion of democracy and freedom. Some held that a godly message was by itself a clear antidote to atheistic tyranny. In the end, the decision was to make the preaching of Christ the sole purpose. (Information on the "Militant Liberty" controversy can be found using Google or other search engines.) Newspaper: El Paso Herald-Post, December 22, 1955.
