A view of some of the incredible lahar mudflow that came down off Mt. Pinatubo in the rains of 1994-1995. This once was a major road across the Pampanga River. The normal elevation here is at the river level. In this region near Bacolor and San Fernando, the lahar is 40 feet deep, and covers a vast area.

Accessing the FEBC compound in Manila, can be a traffic challenge. Staff and missionaries soon learn various back road alternatives, one of which involves passing directly through a cemetery in Valenzuela. For the effect it often produces, newcomers to FEBC are often routed purposely through this site at nighttime.

In the late 1940ís and early 1950ís, missionaries headed for Manila traveled aboard freighters. The 12-passenger ships carried their possessions in 55-gallon drums in the hold. This transparency shows a crew member painting the aft masts as the China Bear, carrying the Bowman, lumbered at about 17 knots through the Pacific Ocean in August of 1949. The trip took around three weeks from the West Coast of the USA.

The original Manila Jeepneys were modified U.S. Army jeeps. By the late 1960's most were falling apart, and engines, bodies and their original styles were slowly being modified with local products. These jeepneys are still in the traditional style. The foreground vehicle is licensed to make the long run between Manila and Bocaue/Malolos in the north.

A stretch of the MacArthur Highway near FEBC in Valenzuela, looking toward Manila proper. The Highway was at the time of this photo still the main road between Manila and the north. In later years the highway became so clogged with traffic that even the construction of a parallel expressway did nothing to help.
