In the early years, this symbol appeared on the Basic Brochures, with the purpose of illustrating what was called "United Effort" of "RADIO STATIONS,""MISSIONARY EFFORT "and " HOMEFRONT COOPERATION." The symbol is reminiscent of the 300 foot tower at Manila, although that tower would not be purchased for another four years. "Jesus Saves" signs in neon were common in the U.S. in the 1930's and '40's on church buildings.

Rev. Bauzon in Pangasinan province, Philippines. His own ministry was revitalized when he heard the messages coming from DZAS, after which his congregation began to grow dramatically. He acquired two PMs, one to place in the window of his home, the other to transport around his community of 19,000 people. Since four languages are spoken in this area, he carefully timed his visits so that the broadcasts were heard in the right language at the right time. He himself traveled once a month the 203 kilometers to Manila to record four broadcasts. See #743 for a color version of Rev. Bauzon and his bicycle.

Among the very first converts of the radio ministry in the Philippines which the staff had the opportunity to meet personally. Max Atienza and Robert Bowman stand with Mr. and Mrs. Para, members of an extended family living on Mindoro Island where there were no other Christians or missionaries. They, along with other households of their family, listened to DZAS for almost a year until, in their own words, "The Spirit of Truth came upon us." Having made the decision to follow Christ, they wanted to be baptized, coming to FEBC to make arrangements.

The demand for "PM" radios became so great that extra funds were raised to purchase radios made outside the FEBC shop. These Phillips radios conformed to FEBC's specifications; the dial shows narrow tuneability to a variety of FEBC-Philippines frequencies, including "tropical band" short wave for areas outside the reach of DZAS. Also note the logo and motto for FEBC-Philippines ("The Call of the Orient"), and "DZAS PM Club".

A rural church. Beside the PM radio is a clock, to help remind people who otherwise pay no attention to time, the moment to tune in to the program that will help them grow in faith. The time is seven P.M."

A 750-foot well had to be dug to provide water. The water was pure, and was made available to the local community. In the 1990's the well began to run dry because of the demand on the water table, caused by Manila's urban encroachment, and was drilled to over 1000 feet where it again was tested to be absolutely pure!

This remarkable photo was taken by the press corps of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). Under President Ramon Magsaysay, "Hukbalahaps", or communist insurgents, were offered farms in land formerly owned by the landed rich, in exchange for turning in their arms. In the center Rev. Lacanilao and Robert Bowman cover a press event to show what the goverment was doing to answer the complaints of poor Filipinos. See also #308.

"The Bowman Trio." Father Robert Bowman, Steve and Jim Bowman formed a trio of singers in the early days of FEBC..on a broadcast designed to be heard on short wave in the U.S. Note the strings of the ukelele - ordinary kite string since proper strings were not available in Manila at that time!
