Freighters of this type were a main means of travel for FEBC missionaries in the late '40s and early 50's. This ship, the S.S. Vigan, here berthed at San Pedro, California, carried the Bowman family to Manila, a 21-day trip, in July of 1953.

Each year at Easter time, at a location to the north of Manila, flagelantes attempt to atone for their sins (or repay God for an unusual stroke of luck), by whipping themselves bloody in a public display of devotion. Hundred of onlookers gather to watch the awful event. Some "penitents" are even crucified. The pageant was begun in the 16th century when Spain occupied the Philippines with its cruel form of Roman Catholicism, and the "pageant" continues into the 21st century. The photographs in this collection were taken from 1948 onward, by a variety of FEBC missionary photographers who could hardly believe their eyes, and who were eager to share the images with supporters back home as a demonstration of why the message of God's love needed to come to Asia.

A worker in the PM department shows Robert Bowman the battery supply for the latest model. The original models (in the brown boxes) needed a large dry cell battery which was impossible to obtain anywhere in the Provinces. Newer models were more efficient, using flashlight batteries which could be purchased at any Sari-Sari store.

People listen to a PM radio in a public setting. The expressions of surprise are because radios are rare in this region. The radio is set to receive DZH8, shortwave, suggesting that the location (probably coastal), is remote from Manila where DZAS-AM could easily be heard.
