Arvid Veidmark speaks on behalf of FEBC in Covina, California. Arvid was the person responsible for preparing the Manila property for the ministry of FEBC, fully documented in this archive. That Arvid and his fellow Chaplain ministered to Japanese prisoners in the Philippines prior to service with FEBC, is not disputed. That General Tomoyuki Yamashita was converted to Christianity before his execution in early 1946, is a fact for which we can so far find no additional documentation. Note: The "Gretos" in the article refer to Ayta tribespeople, often referred to as "Negritos." Venue: Covina (California) Assembly of God church. A very high quality photograph of a home in the Philippines where a "Portable Missionary"(PM) has been placed. The PM's knobs on the front allow for "on" and "off" and tuning. The home is probably in the Pampanga/Zambales area, since it appears Ayta tribespeople are present (on the right); the antlers suggest mountains nearby. The traditional Filipino Christmas Star is hanging, indicating it is Christmas time. Possibly around 1953.

A dramatic view of the crowd assembled in the Luneta, at the First Philippines International Fair in 1953. The famed Rizal monument can be made out at the base of the tall flagpole, which is in alignment with the Fair’s arch symbol. DZAS maintained a broadcasting faclity in booths 28/30, and distributed thousands of pieces of literature, which generated 1000 requests for Bible correspondence courses in the first two weeks. Details in the May 1953 Broadcaster . It is not known how this elevated view was obtained.

The newly completed transmitter building, with DZAS tower and shortwave antennas. Supervision of the construction was done by Ray Meeks, a volunteer from the U.S. The corrugated roofing material could not be obtained in Manila in the curved shape needed for this building; Ray invented a hand-operated crimping device to form the pieces from straight stock. Unlike many original CRCM structures, this one was still standing in 2005. See also #310.

The "crimping" tool invented by FEBC to bend flat corrugated metal roofing material into the large-scale curve necessary to fit the new transmitter building. FEBC produced many innovations in the early days in order to meet various needs, simply because many electronic and construction materials were not available in the years following the war. Ray Meeks, a volunteer from the U.S. who oversaw this project, is seen with hand on the hood of the jeep. See also #310, 311, 323.

Wires for the antenna grounding systems had to be buried underground. The tractor, driven by Don Smith, is pulling a home-built plow which pulls and buries the wires at the same time. Leo Maypa is flanked by MKs Jim and Steve Bowman, who add weight to the plow to keep it down. The photo was made July, 1953. See color slide of this event #637, 639.
