A view of some of the incredible lahar mudflow that came down off Mt. Pinatubo in the rains of 1994-1995. This once was a major road across the Pampanga River. The normal elevation here is at the river level. In this region near Bacolor and San Fernando, the lahar is 40 feet deep, and covers a vast area.

A "QSL" or "DX" card provided to worldwide listeners to FEBC's shortwave broadcasts showed Mt. Mayon (Albay Province, Luzon, Philippines) in full eruption. FEBC's DWAS radio station in the foreground. The photo was taken by a professional photographer friend of FEBC whose business was in Legazpi. Mayon is the Philippines' most active volcano. It has erupted erupted 47 times since 1616. The Mayon cone is almost perfectly symmetrical, and has been called "the world's most perfect Volcano cone." See also #253-255).

Accessing the FEBC compound in Manila, can be a traffic challenge. Staff and missionaries soon learn various back road alternatives, one of which involves passing directly through a cemetery in Valenzuela. For the effect it often produces, newcomers to FEBC are often routed purposely through this site at nighttime.

The ruins of St. Paul's Cathedral, where it is said that Sir John Bowring in 1825, then Governor of Hong Kong, upon seeing the cross on top of the facade, wrote the words to the well known hymn: "In the cross of Christ I glory, towering over the wrecks of time."

In the late 1940ís and early 1950ís, missionaries headed for Manila traveled aboard freighters. The 12-passenger ships carried their possessions in 55-gallon drums in the hold. This transparency shows a crew member painting the aft masts as the China Bear, carrying the Bowman, lumbered at about 17 knots through the Pacific Ocean in August of 1949. The trip took around three weeks from the West Coast of the USA.

The original Manila Jeepneys were modified U.S. Army jeeps. By the late 1960's most were falling apart, and engines, bodies and their original styles were slowly being modified with local products. These jeepneys are still in the traditional style. The foreground vehicle is licensed to make the long run between Manila and Bocaue/Malolos in the north.
