John Broger and Robert Bowman are featured in a service at Bethel Church, Modesto (California) in early 1946, a scant 3 months after FEBC was incorporated. People attending this meeting would have been among the first to learn about the vision for the new radio venture; John had not yet made the first visit to Asia in search of a location for the new stations! Venue: Bethel Church, Modesto (California). Newspaper: the Modesto Bee, February 23, 1946.

The Nanjing Tai Dong Seminary choir that provided FEBC with music for its broadcasts. The director David K. Shao (Shao Kuang) [See #408 and #151]] is in the rear (glasses). This photo appears in the April 1948 "Broadcaster" publication which includes a summary of CCBS activities in China. By the end of 1947 FEBC had 6 hours of broadcasts on XGOA, the government station, with local broadcasts in Shanghai and Nanking (Nanjing). We had just been granted time also on two SW frequencies. "XGOA" was the "Central Broadcasting Station." There was also an FEBC-sponsored broadcast on a "Ginling" station in Nanjing (XLAW), produced in cooperation with the Lutheran Mission, China Inland Mission (Today OMF), and InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. FEBC was called CCBS, Chinese Christian Broadcasting System. Recording equipment provided by CIM, but mainly used by FEBC. The chorus in the photo was associated with the Tai-Tung [Tai Dong]Theological Seminary. Back of photo has a partially obliterated description:
"CCBS Ch[orus?]....
XLA....
Center left......ow-kwan
All...are co[mmitted?]
Christians. " The "ow-kwan" is undoubtedly referring to David K. Shao (Shao-Kuang), the choir's director who appears, in fact, center left. (See also #408). "XLA-" is undoubtedly XLAW. The actual schedules were published in a 1948 calendar (#890).

QSL cards from XGOA and its companion XORA.. We obtained these on a DXer website. They are from 1947, the very time FEBC was broadcasting on "two SW freqs," and, locally in Shanghai and Nanking. By combining information in the January, 1948 "Broadcaster" brochure, along with information found in a calendar giveaway (#407, 890-1) we have been able to reconstruct most of the schedule (see image 890). According to the "Broadcaster" FEBC began on these SW frequencies on October 19, 1947.

The Veidmarks The Arvid Veidmarks were the first missionaries to join FEBC. Their job was to prepare the 12.5 acre site at Karuhatan (Valenzuela) about 2 miles north of the city limits of Manila. The tool of choice was this "JeepDozer" that Arvid used to clear the site in readiness for the construction of housing. The Veidmarks at first lived in U.S. Army housing, before moving to Karuhatan in May of 1947. The jeep was purchased in California (where the photo was taken prior to departure.

In early 1947, FEBC launched a radio program for release in North America called "The Call of the Orient." Its purpose was to heighten awareness of the new radio organization. Its method was to find radio stations throughout America that would air the program on a sustaining basis. The program featured missionary stories, gospel messages, as well as music. The photograph shows Ralph Carmichael directing the FEBC orchestra while on the left Robert Bowman and John Broger wait for their cues. The initial recordings were made in a Los Angeles Cumberland Presbyterian church hall.

A 750-foot well had to be dug to provide water. The water was pure, and was made available to the local community. In the 1990's the well began to run dry because of the demand on the water table, caused by Manila's urban encroachment, and was drilled to over 1000 feet where it again was tested to be absolutely pure!
