Travelers arriving on a Pan Am 377 "Stratocruiser" in 1951 (est.) must disembark and walk across the tarmac in the bad weather at Manila International Airport. The photo is taken of the arrival of a visitor to FEBC named "Jesse." It is not known if "Jesse" is any of the passengers walking hastily along in the rain. The flag that waves on the right indicates "G&P Company."

This photo was taken by a person named "Jesse" visiting FEBC in the very early 1950's He was apparently impressed by the flags of the U.S. and Philippines flying side by side at CRCM, Manila. FEBC's initial effort was largely American, even though the intent was from the beginning to make the operations ultimately indigenous. The Philippines was part of the American Commonwealth from 1898 to 1946. FEBC began its work in the Philippines in 1947. In the background is the directional short wave antenna for the regional Philippines.

Hong Kong Island approaching the ferry. The dominant white structure is the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank building, eventually demolished to allow for construction of a new skyscraper. This is one of several high quality 3"x5" black and white prints of Hong Kong, acquired by a man who visited FEBC Philippines in about 1951. The prints are probably commercial, although not so marked. Images 578-582.

A view of Hong Kong harbor from Victoria Peak, in about 1951. In the foreground is Hong Kong Island, with the dominating structure of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank building, and across the harbor, Kowloon. Many FEBC personnel passed through this harbor on ships returning to the United States from Manila. FEBC would establish an office in Kowloon in the 1960's. This is one of several high quality 3"x5" black and white prints of Hong Kong, acquired by a man who visited FEBC Philippines in about 1951. The prints are probably commercial, although not so marked. Images 578-582.

People gather outside a barrio home to hear the gospel on a PM radio. Since these barrios rarely have electricity, a radio of any kind is a novelty. A good view of the classic Philippine Nipa construction.

Notes say that Tranquilina Dianala (left) with her companion Rosalina Nandaya are missionaries in Argao, Cebu, working with the Evangelical Free Church. Byrd notes that 75% of their living space is within the photo..that he had to sit on the window sill in order to snap this picture.

The event is not certain, posibly a baptismal service or groundbreaking for a new church. Indications on the slide frame suggest that this is a group of believers in the barrio near FEBC as a result of listening to the broadcasts, or possibly personal contact with staff. Present are staff members Max Atienza (addressing the group), and Anacleto Lacanilao (middle, head bowed). Also, Enyong del Rosario stands in line second from the right.

Philippine mountain (Bontoc) tribespeople. FEBC worked with many missionary agencies to provide broadcasting for many of these people groups, using "PM" radios. The origin of this and similar photos in the FEBC collection is not certain. This series of photos (902-905) are from a set of transparencies marked "H.I." The year is often discerned by the type of Kodak slide mountings.
