On the transparency mount is found the words, "Mrs. Kin, Cantonese." FEBC began broadcasting to China in the Fall of 1949. Mrs. Kin may have been a local resident of Manila, although most Chinese living in Manila are Amoy speakers.

Closeup of an antenna feedline. Supports were made from local wood and the lines themselves were the innovations of missionary electrical engineers, much of whose training came from their experience as HAMs (amateur radio enthusiasts).

An interesting view of the DZAS tower construction, apparently taken from the "dogleg" portion of the FEBC property. The "boom" can be clearly seen in operation at the 150-foot level of construction. This part of the FEBC property was utilized for local staff housing.

DZAS tower under construction in 1950. Close examination of this transparency reveals that the construction boom is severely twisted, and a nearby tower girder is bent. On May 9 of this year, at the 75 foot level, the collapsing boom narrowly missed Byrd Brunemier, hitting a plank on which he was standing. Unfortunately, the boom rebounded, delivering a fatal blow to hired rigger Matring de Leon.

As was the case with all early construction jobs at CRCM, the tower bases were poured by relatively labor-intensive methods. From the left, Homer Kreps, Anastacio Bautista, Leo Maypa, Don Geary.

Paul Pipkin, FEBC missionary, visits Volcano Island, the heart of the Lake Taal scenic phenomenon (see #797 for an early view of the whole larger lake). On the left is Paul; in the center, Max Atienza. Missionaries, in creating slide shows for the supporting public enjoyed referring to this geological wonder as "the lake within the lake within the island (Volcano) within the lake (Taal), within the island (Luzon)within the Ocean." Some even claimed the lake within Volcano Island had a "rock" in the middle which was used for bombing practice in WWII! In subsequent years the volcano itself erupted, increasing the size of Volcano Island significantly.

A photo taken by an FEBC missionary of a float in the a July 4 Philippine Independence day celebration in Manila. In 1962 President Disodado Macapagal changed the Philippine independence date to June 12 to honor the declaration of independence put forward by Emilio Aguinaldo in 1898. This photo may be associated with image #399 - July 4, 1950.
