The full story of this beautiful photograph of the 1950's era, has yet to be researched. Mrs. Robert (Eleanor) Bowman, received this photograph as an Easter greeting from Mrs. Maria V. Maypa in April of 1950. It shows the family and home in Calangcung, Makato, Capiz, Panay (Island). The photo was taken on March 30. The assumption is that Mrs. Maypa was a listener to FEBC, and who visited Mrs. Bowman on a trip to FEBC-Manila.

A good closeup of the base leg installation of the 300 foot DZAS AM tower, Manila. Every able-bodied worker on the compound helped with this project, whether or not experienced with tower construction. Here compound woodworker/carpenter Enyong del Rosario helps to push a steel leg into position. Sadly, a professional rigger hired to work on the project, was the only fatality, when crushed by a swinging boom.

In late 1950, John Broger makes a trip throughout southeast Asia in search of broadcast material for the new shortwave stations in the Philippines. The contacts made on this trip was the beginning of a long cooperative association with the Christian Missionary Alliance (CMA) and the eventual establishment of a recording studio in Korat. Here John contemplates a purchase at a local market in Thailand. See Set 6 - Paul Johnson/Korat Studio for additional details.

A PM radio in a local barrio in the Philippines. The February 1951 Broadcaster captions this photo: "This PM (Portable Missionary) ministers to a barrio of 500. Two men from this barrio traveled down to DZAS to tell of their acceptance of Christ as ther Personal Savior." See image #30 for a wider view of the yard.

Not much information can be found to go along with this image, although there are many photos of the occasion in the FEBC-LM collection. Identifiable; Rev. Isabelo Montejo (lower left, head of PM department); Billy Reames (in back, also working with the PM department); Rev. Rudi Esperanza (atop the radio pyramid, District Superintendent of the Assemblies of God). The man smiling on the right appears to be Rev. Dr. Santiago Cruspero, FEBC board member. The predominant PM is for DZB2 which broadcasts on the tropical band, suggesting the PMs are destined for an area far from Manila.

It is quite common for a photograph of the recipients to be taken whenever a PM-radio is placed. Very often the person receiving the radio is a believer who wants his family or whole barrio to hear the gospel. In 1950, only 5 years after war's end hardly any people living outside major cities have electricity, much less radios. Portable radios are unheard of. FEBC's idea of a portable radio was ingenious, its radios were in great demand, and thousands of people heard the gospel and believed.

On the transparency is written: "Mrs. Greg Tingson, Jaro, Iloilo City." Iloilo City is on Panay Island, some 450 kilometers to the south of Manila, where at nightime DZAS could be heard well in the 1950's before the airwaves became crowded with stations. Rev. Greg Tingson became one of the Philippines' most well-known evangelists.

FEBC staff Rev. Anacleto Lacanilao baptizes a believer. Many people in the local community of Karuhatan became believers during the first decade of FEBC's operation. The exact location of this baptism is not certain..possibly in a section of the Tullahan Rivernear CRCM. The onlookers are boys curious about the strange goings-on.
