The base leg construction of the DZAS tower. The lack of proper equipment was no obstacle to the missionary and local staff. Here the lower sections are being put together using the sectional ladders that came with the tower, and which would eventually have to be bolted to it.

Construction of the DZAS 300 foot tower...50 foot level, showing the use of the boom for lifting the heavy steel girders into place, a dangerous proposition for the workers. Not too many days after this picture was taken a hired rigger was killed when a piece swung around unexpectedly and crushed him.

In 1950-51, materials and equipment were in short supply. The concrete for the massive bases for the 300 foot self-supporting tower had to be mixed in this utility mixer by shoveling in the cement shovel by shovel. In the picture, l. to r., Homer Kreps, Pablo Aguirino, Don Geary, Byrd Brunemeier, Anastacio Bautista.

This photo reveals interesting details relating to the construction of the DZAS tower bases. Sand, cement and water were measured, poured and shoveled manually into the mixers and then down the makeshift chutes into the 5x5x5 foot hand-dug holes (appx.15 cubic yards per hole). The anchor bolts for the tower legs are ready to push down into the concrete and be aligned by the square jig nailed to the cross pieces. And old army mess water tank serves as water source. In the background army tents are still serving as construction shop and bodega. In the foreground right there is a KLIM can used for measuring cement. KLIM was powdered milk, the only milk available in the Philippines at the time...and despised by most missionary kids!

Press pass used by FEBC personnel for news coverage of the 4th anniversary of the Philippine Republic. The U.S. granted independence to the Philippines on July 4, 1946, to coincided with U.S. Independence Day. In 1962 President Disodado Macapagal changed the date to June 12 to honor the declaration of independence put forward by Emilio Aguinaldo in 1898. The actual size of the pass is about 50mm by 75mm, and is embossed with the seal of the president of the Philippines.
