Here is a high quality photo of a family posing around a PM in Taliba, Batangas, Philippines, 1950. The photo was taken by Byrd Brunemeier, who was an excellent photographer who went to great lengths to pose photos like this one. The photo was reproduced in the January 1957 Broadcaster where it explains that "six years ago, one of the first PMs was tested and placed in this home. [The] Lasala family and friends listen to the hymn 'Pass Me Not O Gentle Savior' as it comes over one of the first PMs from Manila." The original we scanned here is 4x5 inches in size. See #1539 for a color slide of the scene.

This is a 1939(??) Chevrolet that has been converted into some kind of Jeepney. It was used by FEBC to shuttle people to downtown Manila and back. The caption of this picture in a 1950's"Broadcaster" publication explains that missionary ladies went to a hospital every Thursday to minister to patients, many of whom were WWII casualties.

PMs are being assembled in the shop behind the Manila administration/studio building in about 1950. The workers are: Justino Lacanilao, Proceso Marcelo, missionary engineer Howard Erickson. People often ask about the kind of batteries used in the original PMs; you can see one of the dry cells in the striped container next to Justino.

A "Portable Missionary (PM)" box. The woodworker in the CRCM woodshop made the boxes of mahogany - the standard and most popular wood for construction of just about anything, in the Philippines. The "grille" was hand-sawn with a coping saw from masonite. Now the workers in the middle section of the shop would insert the electronics, generally to receive one or several of the FEBC stations. The idea to construct the radios came when it became apparent after DZAS's sign on in mid-1948, that many people within reach of DZAS did not have electricity or radios. It turned out to be one of FEBC's most successful programs.

Among the very first converts of the radio ministry in the Philippines which the staff had the opportunity to meet personally. Max Atienza and Robert Bowman stand with Mr. and Mrs. Para, members of an extended family living on Mindoro Island where there were no other Christians or missionaries. They, along with other households of their family, listened to DZAS for almost a year until, in their own words, "The Spirit of Truth came upon us." Having made the decision to follow Christ, they wanted to be baptized, coming to FEBC to make arrangements.

FEBC staffer Max Atienza (r.), explains the use of a wire antenna for maximum reception of the newly issued PM to Modesto Buta and Demostenes Cenit, who are taking the set back to their barrio Malibog, Cebu. The men told Max that "There is not one radio in our barrio; this set will cause a commotion!" The sets sporting DZAS grilles were often also capable of receiving short wave station DZB2.

Missionary kids (Vietmark children) walk down the woodsy Karuhatan road along the walls of the "Christian Radio City Manila" (CRCM) compound as it appeared in about 1950. The road was also known informally as Pugad Baboy ("Pig Sty") Road. In later years the road was paved and named on official maps as General T. de Leon Road. The general area was renamed Valenzuela, a city of Metro Manila, and today is completely enveloped by Manila's urbanization.

This man, Mr. Julian Valderama, was a direct result of the PM radio ministry. According to the November, 1950 Broadcaster, Rev. Jose Abellera had received a PM from DZAS six months previously to Santa Cruz, Zambales, where there had been no church. In no time a church of 49 members resulted. Rev. Abellera also took the PM into the hills of Pangasinan, where, as he said, "People were living and dying without ever hearing of Jesus." One who heard and believed was Mr. Valderama, who at the time the photo was taken, was studying in Bible Seminary.

The KGEI electronic shop. This photo, probably taken by General Electric prior to FEBC takeover, shows the shop in perfect order -all tools in their proper place - a sight rarely seen at a normal radio station. An enlargement of the calendar shows this is May of 1950.
