John and Dorothy Broger at CRCM, Manila. In the background is seen missionary house #2. The stairway can be see to the living quarters upstairs, while the lower portion is being finished. The inscription on the reverse reads, " 'just arrived' (D.B), April 24, 1948, Manila." Dorothy then took most of the photos in this archive dating 1948 and 1949. The Brogers were fashionable even in the heat and humidity of the non-airconditioned environment of CRCM Manila.

House-girls' living quarters on the CRCM compound. One of the attractive features to local workers forr FEBC was the provision of accommodations, a real benefit for those who had come from the Provinces. Expat missionaries needed the extra help to cope with the unfamiliar requirements of living in the tropics, including the purchase of food and other goods at the local shops which required good bargaining skills.

View of the compound from inside the front gate area. Under the large tree in the foreground, is a faucet, delivering pure well water (a rare commmodity in 1948) constructed explicitly for the benefit of the local community. See images #306 and #329 for closeups of the facility and details.

A local Karuhatan resident fills his water cans at the FEBC community water tap. In the period following World War II, pure water would have been a rare commodity. When FEBC finished drilling its well, we immediately made the water available to the local community, by means of a faucet placed just inside the front gate. The sign quotes Jesus' offer of the Water of Life as found in John 4. The word "tubig," seen four times on the sign is "water" in Tagalog. See also photos #305 and #329.

FEBC-Manila missionaries greet the arrival of a ship at the Manila docks. Following WW2, most staff traveled across the Pacific by freighter, bringing their possessions in 55 gallon drums (in the lower right hand corner) with removable lids. The trip from the west coast of the U.S. to Manila took approximately three weeks without intervening stops. This photo is possibly related to #362, which shows John Broger (in white suit and hat) on the PFEL's California Bear.

This view of CRCM shows the northwest corner in early years, with view of missionary house #2 at right and local staff men's dormitory in the right middle background, and showing the fruit tree layout. In the far right distance are buildings lining the MacArthur Highway, at the time the only highway to northern Luzon. A small detail at the corner of house #2: a drum of kerosene...used for stoves and for the cans in which the legs of ant-proof tables had to be placed.

This is probably the only existing copy of a calendar/schedule giveaway associated with the China Christian Broadcasting System in China. It is comprised of a backing and 14 tissue-paper leaves upon which are printed the radio schedule and the twelve months of 1948. The second page, partially visible through the title, shows the frequencies of XGOA (660kc and 9730kc) XLAW (1030kc) and XORA (1390kc) and the times of the individual broadcasts. It is presumed that during 1948 the broadcasts were terminated due to the collapse of the KMT. The radio work was a cooperative venture with the China Inland Mission (CIM) and other Christian agencies. The actual calendar size is 50mm x 100mm.

Documents are invitations to the dedication service of KZAS, FEBC's first radio station. Shown are the front and back side of two invitations...the reverse sides of each are slightly damaged. The event was scheduled to coincide with the second anniversary of independence from the United States, which obviously was also American Independence Day. Filipinos themselves decided later to change the date to mark a major indigenous independence movement.

Eleanor Bowman, wife of co-founder Robert H. Bowman, was a gifted artist and her skills were put to good use in the early days of FEBC. On early "deputation" tours in the U.S. she would create "chalk talks" before live audiences in supporting churches. One favorite image was that of a chasm separating people from God, over which a cross was drawn, demonstrating the means of salvation. Live music would accompany the drawings. Eleanor also provided the majority of the artwork, layout and copy for the FEBC Broadcaster publications for several decades. The date of this photo is an estimate.

One of various tower views of the CRCM compound in the early years, probably taken from one of the directional antennas. Looking towards the north. Two missionary houses are completed, not yet painted. An interesting detail is the typhoon guy cable connected to the house on the right. These cables were a hazard to pedestrians taking shortcuts across the compound, especially at night.

FEBC promoted its ministry through radio and other media, including 78rpm record albums. This album featured Robert Bowman and John Broger singing missionary songs from the program "The Call of the Orient", accompanied by the FEBC orchestra under the direction of Ralph Carmichael. The album cost $3.75. Additional details are found in the July, 1948 Broadcaster.
