He eventually returned to the U.S. and served at KGEI in San Francisco until his retirement in the 1990's.

The kitchen/dining area of missionary house #1. Mrs. Jane Handlos is at the sink. Hot water would not be available in the housing for many years to come. Pantry table legs were set in coffee cans filled with kerosene in an attempt to prevent ants from coming aboard. However, the ants soon learned to cross the moats by laying down a pontoon bridge of their dead fellow ants. See also #1497.

John and Dorothy Broger at CRCM, Manila. In the background is seen missionary house #2. The stairway can be see to the living quarters upstairs, while the lower portion is being finished. The inscription on the reverse reads, " 'just arrived' (D.B), April 24, 1948, Manila." Dorothy then took most of the photos in this archive dating 1948 and 1949. The Brogers were fashionable even in the heat and humidity of the non-airconditioned environment of CRCM Manila.

House-girls' living quarters on the CRCM compound. One of the attractive features to local workers forr FEBC was the provision of accommodations, a real benefit for those who had come from the Provinces. Expat missionaries needed the extra help to cope with the unfamiliar requirements of living in the tropics, including the purchase of food and other goods at the local shops which required good bargaining skills.

A local Karuhatan resident fills his water cans at the FEBC community water tap. In the period following World War II, pure water would have been a rare commodity. When FEBC finished drilling its well, we immediately made the water available to the local community, by means of a faucet placed just inside the front gate. The sign quotes Jesus' offer of the Water of Life as found in John 4. The word "tubig," seen four times on the sign is "water" in Tagalog. See also photos #305 and #329.
