Rev. P. Castro (Probably on the left), a horse-back circuit rider, takes the gospel to isolated villages in the mountains. At the height of the rainy season, these villages are cut off because of swollen rivers. Rev. Castro will place these ten PMs among the villages so that the gospel could be heard when he cannot not visit. DZB2 is the "tropical band" short wave service of FEBC Manila, covering areas outside the reach of DZAS-AM.

One of the wonderful things about FEBC's collection of historic photographs is the recording of national life as it was in the Philippines, especially in barrios and homes where FEBC was distributing radios and doing "follow up." This scene shows a PM hung from the cieling of a barber shop, traditional community gathering spots even as they are today in the 21st century.

Missionary kids (Vietmark children) walk down the woodsy Karuhatan road along the walls of the "Christian Radio City Manila" (CRCM) compound as it appeared in about 1950. The road was also known informally as Pugad Baboy ("Pig Sty") Road. In later years the road was paved and named on official maps as General T. de Leon Road. The general area was renamed Valenzuela, a city of Metro Manila, and today is completely enveloped by Manila's urbanization.

This unusual photograph depicts Shanghai street scene in 1947. The photograph measures only about 52mm square and bears no inscription on the back to indicate its significance to FEBC. However someone has written at the top, "ANT." with an arrow pointing to a mast on the roof of the large structure behind the shop fronts. A closer examination of the photograph showed that both the railing grillework on the rear top of the building and the penthouse structure were consistent with that in image #00079. When we examined #79, we noted antenna guy wires attached to the railing. We concluded that the building is the other side of the studio in which CCBS' (FEBC) broadcasts were recorded in 1947 in that city. We do not know how the antenna was utilized. In fact, the building is that of Grace Church (sign at left). The church was closed until the late 1970's, then reopened as a public church.

This man, Mr. Julian Valderama, was a direct result of the PM radio ministry. According to the November, 1950 Broadcaster, Rev. Jose Abellera had received a PM from DZAS six months previously to Santa Cruz, Zambales, where there had been no church. In no time a church of 49 members resulted. Rev. Abellera also took the PM into the hills of Pangasinan, where, as he said, "People were living and dying without ever hearing of Jesus." One who heard and believed was Mr. Valderama, who at the time the photo was taken, was studying in Bible Seminary.

Administration building and radio tower, CRCM. Robert Bowman is flanked by two men who had helped make the erection of the new 300 foot radio tower possible. Working for Mackay Radio in Manila, they learned that FEBC was in search of a tower. Realizing that Mackay had no use for a tower that had cost them $25,000 to purchase and ship to Manila, they offered it to FEBC, which in turn offered the sum total of their existing field bank account: $300! Amazingly, the U.S.HQ for Mackay accepted! A year or two later one of the men, having returned to the States, wrote Dr. Bowman, informing him that his visit to CRCM had awakened in him a renewed interest in spiritual things. He wrote: "Now I know what it means to be born again."

DZAS 300 foot radio tower shortly after its construction. One way to determine the "age" of the tower is to consider the top of the tower, which originally had only a small pulley tripod. Later, to improve DZAS' coverage, a radiating "hat" was added. Still later, when the DZAS transmitter was moved to Bocaue, the tower supported the FM antenna for DZFE. Finally, when DZFE's antennas were moved to Makati, the tower was utilized for STL link with Bocaue.

Photo #19 - Photo Essay by Byrd Brunemeier June, 1959--Rev. Isabelo Montejo visits a PM Club home. Note the typical slatted floor. This is the home of Ubaldo Sable in barrio Buenavista, Santiago, Isabela Province. Mrs. Sable acquired the radio from FEBC in 1954. Since then, her husband and 40 families in the barrio had become believers and at the time of the photo were stockpiling materials to build a chapel. Their ultimate plans were to eventually hire a full time pastor.

One night a band of robbers invaded the barrio. The Sables were forced to lie on the floor while the robbers looked over what they could steal. Eyeing the radio, they clicked it on to see if it worked. It so happened a sermon was in progress, and they stopped to listen to it...all the way to the end. They then turned the radio off, thanked the family and left without further molestation..a courtesy not accorded many of their neighbors who were mauled by the band. --

Photo #14 - Photo Essay by Byrd Brunemeier June, 1959 -- Rev. Montejo, together with Mrs. Martin, examine a box containing 72 flashlight batteries, which power this PM Radio in the home of Pastor Roberto Martin. The original battery had gone flat months before, but given the isolation of this location and thus the impracticability of getting a new one from Manila, Pastor Martin would buy the D cells from the local store at 40 centavos each, a total cost of 29 pesos. Photographer Byrd Brunemeier himself an electronics engineer, noted that 60 batteries were in series to provide the 90 volts for the B, and 12 in parallel to provide the 1.5 volts for the A power supply, an ingenious solution. The 29 peso cost was approximately $15 - in 1959 a huge amount for this pastor, but demonstrating the crucial role FEBC's radio broadcasts played in his life.

On Reverse: "Tala Leprosarium, Rizal [Province]. Mrs. Howard Eppler." Rev. Isabelo Montejo, PM director for FEBC, poses with staff and patients. This photo appears to be related to photo BW-149. It is assumed Mrs. Eppler is a missionary working with the leprosarium. The date is approximated from the Phillips model radio.

Mr. Felicisimo (Feliciano?) Paano visits the PM radio office at CRCM. A believer, and his leprosy in an arrested stage, he comes to pick up a this PM radio which he will take back with him to the Culion Leprosarium on the Island of Palawan. The map behind him shows some of the locations of the PMs; Palawan is the Island just just behind his head. See also image #12.

Interior of the Bocaue transmitter building. Shown here are the "TEC" transmitters that served FEBC from the early 1960's until the late 1990's. The transmitters were originally built for use by the U.S. Navy as 30 kw CW (Code) transmitters in 1945 but never put into service. FEBC learned of their existence in 1960 and bought four of them. They were converted for audio and upgraded in power to 40-50kw. They operated faithfully to points in Asia until project S.A.V.E. replaced them with 100kw Continental Electronic transmittters in the late 20th and early 21st century!
