Nobusuke Kishi, Prime Minister of Japan,(right) visits the Philippines. On the left is Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Felixberto Serrano, who offered the welcome on behalf of the Philippines; Nobusuke’s translator is responding in English. The event appears to be held at Villamor Air Base (adjacent to Manila International Airport). Only DZFM (government station) and FEBC (DZAS) are the only two identifiable stations covering the event. Nobusuke was on a tour of Asia, seeking agreements on war reparations with countries it had occupied in WW2. Security is tight because of possible negative reaction to the first official visit of the Japanese since the war.

Perhaps a low profile mike is the explanation as to why there appears to be no microphone attached to the DZAS mike stand.

Church in Ban Phu Sang Noy Village, Laos. This church, which had no resident pastor, received most of its Christian encouragement from FEBC's short wave broadcasts. The village is Meo, or Hmong. FEBC's first broadcasts were produced in Lao, spoken by many villagers (mainly men). The Christian Missionary Alliance cooperated with FEBC in the production of its first Lao language broadcasts, and regularly visited this and other tribal villages as they first began to respond to the broadcasts. From one of these villages came FEBC's first Hmong language broadcaster, whose programs eventually stimulated a revival resulting in at least 250,000 conversions starting in the late 1980's. More detailed background on this photo is provided in the August, 1958 edition of the Broadcaster.

The newly completed CRCM administration building in July of 1958. A sketch for this architecture was drawn by John Broger in 1947. See #321. This building, along with others built at this same time, was constructed mainly of common mahogany, and came under immediate attack by termites and was eventually demolished to make way for an all-concrete building. (see #275). It was commonly said about the old building shortly before demolition: "The only thing holding it up is the termites holding hands."
