The very shy "Negritos" are recipients of PM radios in the 1950s. Dr. Doug Pennoyer of Biola University, in consultation with Dr. Tom Headland a foremost expert on Philippine tribal groups, have helped us identify the specific indigenous people in this photo as "Western Luzon Agtas possibly from Quezon or Cagayan Province as evidenced by the arrows which are distinct from the Zambales Ayta; the house building materials; and the particular clothing."

Our first Overseas Chinese broadcasters in 1949! Will Schubert was a missionary in Chungking, China who fled when the PRC was declared. We are not sure what mission he was with. He came to Manila and did broadcasts there for a while, then returned to China! He was placed under house arrest, but eventually they let him go and he came back to Manila again. They say his Mandarin was not that perfect, but his heart so great that it moved Chinese listeners to tears. He did the broadcast with a Chinese "secretary," who apparently read Scripture passages and helped him with his Chinese! This photo was taken in the 1950's when he returned the second time. Dr. Robert Bowman has a story of a Medical Doctor he met in Hong Kong, who became a Christian listening to him. The doctor said that his Chinese was poor, but "something" in his spirit made him keep listening.

Rev. Bauzon in Pangasinan province, Philippines. His own ministry was revitalized when he heard the messages coming from DZAS, after which his congregation began to grow dramatically. He acquired two PMs, one to place in the window of his home, the other to transport around his community of 19,000 people. Since four languages are spoken in this area, he carefully timed his visits so that the broadcasts were heard in the right language at the right time. He himself traveled once a month the 203 kilometers to Manila to record four broadcasts. See #743 for a color version of Rev. Bauzon and his bicycle.

The PM shop at Manila. Robert Bowman inspects some of the equipment used to test the various models. The model on the right was the last to be made by hand in the shop. In the later 1950's a European-made model became the standard (shown on the left). A 1959 FEBC publication asserted that PM's were now placed in 23 islands and 48 provinces of the Philippines.

This is what the Manila International Airport check in area for Pan American looked like in 1954. Here the Bowman family prepares to leave for the U.S., among the first to travel across the Pacific by air. It was still the custom for staff to go to the airport and see them off. Pan Am utilized Boeing Stratocruiser aircraft, four engine double-deckers, which were in fact modified B-29s. The airplanes were noisy, and required 36 hours to arrive on the West Coast of the U.S., with stops in Guam, Wake and Honolulu.

Members of the Chinese Vesper Hour (Amoy), including Mrs. Chua Kian Tiang, pose for a photo in Studio "C." Date is not certain, but the U.S. flag shows pre-1959 48 stars. In the early days, FEBC's development depended largely on U.S. donors and personnel. Also prominent in early photos is the "Truth/Freedom banner," which was an early local motto. Some missionary movements after WII were stimulated in part by the concern for the spread of atheistic communism in Asia.
