Freighters of this type were a main means of travel for FEBC missionaries in the late '40s and early 50's. This ship, the S.S. Vigan, here berthed at San Pedro, California, carried the Bowman family to Manila, a 21-day trip, in July of 1953.

Originally HLDA, FEBC's 250,000 watt AM transmitter site is located on Cheju Island, South Korea. In the 1970's and '80s, there was great concern on the part of the Korean goverment that radio facilities could be destroyed or taken over by commandos from North Korea. Thus the camouflage paint job. The government also required deployment of armed guards (see #466).

A guard keeps watch over the HLAZ compound in 1979. The concern is on the part of the South Korean government that North Korean commandos will destroy or take over the facility in the case of invasion. The signal is heard well in southern Japan, China to Beijing, N. Korea and Siberian Russia.

Baguio Minister's Conference, October 1956. Left to right: Max Atienza, Proceso Marcelo, Lydia Castro, Kay Bronson, Celia Marcelo, Anacleto Lacanilao. In the early days, FEBC promoted the value of radio as a means of expanding the influence of the church. The map on the wall behind shows the great concern in those days for the spread of atheistic communism in Asia. According to a note on the reverse, the photo was perhaps taken by Dr. Bob Pierce of World Vision.

This is what the Manila International Airport check in area for Pan American looked like in 1954. Here the Bowman family prepares to leave for the U.S., among the first to travel across the Pacific by air. It was still the custom for staff to go to the airport and see them off. Pan Am utilized Boeing Stratocruiser aircraft, four engine double-deckers, which were in fact modified B-29s. The airplanes were noisy, and required 36 hours to arrive on the West Coast of the U.S., with stops in Guam, Wake and Honolulu.

The Bocaue transmitter site was completely renovated during the years 1995-2005. Here the three new Continential 100kw transmitters provide short wave service to Southeast Asia. The transmitters employ a kind of dynamic carrier control (DCC) technology, greatly reducing the cost of input power. Some of the DCC components can be see at the back of the transmitter on the left.

John and Dorothy Broger stand beside the S.S. Lane Victory. John is about to leave for a journey to China and points beyond, in search of opportunities for broadcasting the gospel. The May 1946 Far East Broadcaster gives account of the departure, and reports that John arrived in Shanghai on April 17 (1947). The Lane Victory was one of thousands of "Victory" and "Liberty" freighters operated by the merchant marine during WWII. As of 2008, this ship was still operational out of San Pedro, California, preserved as a WWII monument.

Robert and Eleanor Bowman, and John and Dorothy Broger pose beside their vehicle while on a "deputation" tour to raise funds for the new FEBC endeavor. In the first days of FEBC, funds had to be raised on the basis of their shared vision, since no actual radio stations or broadcasting yet existed. Churches eagerly made appointments to hear the FEBC story because of the fame of Robert Bowman as a singer and speaker on the Haven of Rest radio program, and because of a surge of interest in missionary evangelism following World War 2. See #1932 for a newspaper clipping advertising their appearance in a church in Modesto (California), probably on this same 1946 trip.

One of the earliest views of the CRCM compound in 1946 or 1947. The inscription on the back, probably written by Arvid Veidmark: "More Q. material. Little house on right is plywood." Apparently "Q" meant Quonset (military prefab) material from which the first transmitter building and missionary housing would be built. The famous "jeepdozer" is visible under the tree, as well as the "gate house" in the background.

Eleanor Bowman, wife of co-founder Robert H. Bowman, was a gifted artist and her skills were put to good use in the early days of FEBC. On early "deputation" tours in the U.S. she would create "chalk talks" before live audiences in supporting churches. One favorite image was that of a chasm separating people from God, over which a cross was drawn, demonstrating the means of salvation. Live music would accompany the drawings. Eleanor also provided the majority of the artwork, layout and copy for the FEBC Broadcaster publications for several decades. The date of this photo is an estimate.
