In the early years, this symbol appeared on the Basic Brochures, with the purpose of illustrating what was called "United Effort" of "RADIO STATIONS,""MISSIONARY EFFORT "and " HOMEFRONT COOPERATION." The symbol is reminiscent of the 300 foot tower at Manila, although that tower would not be purchased for another four years. "Jesus Saves" signs in neon were common in the U.S. in the 1930's and '40's on church buildings.

Thorndike New, or "Tony," (Niu Chang Teh) was FEBC's first technical engineer, and served with FEBC's efforts in Shanghai until communist takeover in 1949 made Christian ministry impossible. Tony graduated from the College of Electrical Engineering in the Central University of China in Chungking in 1945, and was already serving Christian broadcasting in China at Grace Church's studio. Mr. and Mrs. James Hudson Taylor II, head of the Northwest Bible Institute, Shensi Province. The Taylors, Free Methodists, were instrumental in helping John Broger form the leadership team of the China Christian Broadcasting System (CCBS). Mr. Taylor provided a major article on the formation of the CCBS in the Far East Broadcaster publication, September, 1946 (Photo of Taylors). Mr. Taylor was grandson of the famed Hudson Taylor, founder of the China Inland Mission.

John and Dorothy Broger stand beside the S.S. Lane Victory. John is about to leave for a journey to China and points beyond, in search of opportunities for broadcasting the gospel. The May 1946 Far East Broadcaster gives account of the departure, and reports that John arrived in Shanghai on April 17 (1947). The Lane Victory was one of thousands of "Victory" and "Liberty" freighters operated by the merchant marine during WWII. As of 2008, this ship was still operational out of San Pedro, California, preserved as a WWII monument.

Robert and Eleanor Bowman, and John and Dorothy Broger pose beside their vehicle while on a "deputation" tour to raise funds for the new FEBC endeavor. In the first days of FEBC, funds had to be raised on the basis of their shared vision, since no actual radio stations or broadcasting yet existed. Churches eagerly made appointments to hear the FEBC story because of the fame of Robert Bowman as a singer and speaker on the Haven of Rest radio program, and because of a surge of interest in missionary evangelism following World War 2. See #1932 for a newspaper clipping advertising their appearance in a church in Modesto (California), probably on this same 1946 trip.

One of the earliest views of the CRCM compound in 1946 or 1947. The inscription on the back, probably written by Arvid Veidmark: "More Q. material. Little house on right is plywood." Apparently "Q" meant Quonset (military prefab) material from which the first transmitter building and missionary housing would be built. The famous "jeepdozer" is visible under the tree, as well as the "gate house" in the background.

A view of Grace Baptist Church, Shanghai, where FEBC produced its first broadcasts for release on XLAW, Nanjing, in early 1947. The actual date of first broadcast was February 9. The building beyond the main church is where broadcasts were already being produced by local Christians. Note the antenna on the roof. Other 1946 views of the building are found in images #79 and #156.

William Winter was the CBS/KSFO commentator who broadcast hope to America's allies on KGEI, during World War II. This photograph, from his book "Voice from America," shows him in 1946 in the Philippines, to attend a State dinner in his honor, given by President Manuel Roxas. FEBC acquired KGEI in 1960, but maintains its historical record from 1939.

These are four copies, probably made in the 1960s, of the minutes of the first FEBC Advisory Board Meeting, held in Los Angeles. Note James Hudson Taylor II, was in attendance. The original document is not found. The Shoreham Hotel was the location of the second FEBC office (the first was in the Calvary Assembly of God, Inglewood, CA). The hotel was eventually demolished, and at this revision, is a parking lot.
