This remarkable photo, undoubtedly taken in the early to mid 1940's, was located by FEBC personnel in Shanghai, in November of 2006. It shows the door to the studio in which broadcasting was already being produced by local Christians, when John Broger made his contacts in that city in 1946. The call sign of the station being used (XMGC) appears over the doorway, and can also be seen in in photo #45. This photo was shown to FEBC by the son of Rev. Charles Chi (see #9), who was pastor of Grace Baptist Church at that time. The source of the photo appears in #1224. A broader view of this side of the building in 1946, is found in image #79.

John Broger poses for a photo in his US Naval officer uniform. John joined the navy in 1942 eventually serving on the aircraft carrier Bon Homme Richard as a radar specialist. He was eventually promoted to lieutenant and intelligence officer. It was when the ship returned to San Francisco in September of 1945 that the Robert Bowmans met with John and wife Dorothy in a room near the top of the Mark Hopkins Hotel (Provided free for U.S. Officers) and made a pact to start up the radio organization.

John Broger and Arvid Veidmark meet in Manila during John’s visit there. Arvid is a Chaplain in the U.S. Army. Arvid agrees to return to the U.S., raise his support and return to the Philippines to clear the land for the construction of the proposed radio stations. They are standing beside a military landing craft that has been thrust onto the land by a typhoon. The building in the background is probably the Manila Hotel.

Pastor Charles Chi, John Broger and Mrs. Chi. Charles Chi was the General Secretary for FEBC's China Christian Broadcasting System in 1946. According to a report made to the FEBC public in 1946 by James Hudson Taylor, the Rev. Chi was pastor of the Grace Baptist Church in Shanghai , which had the largest seating capacity of all churches in the city. [See Set #12 for old photos Shanghai-related images] Broadcasts would be released on a local station in Nanking by February of 1947, and later that year in Shanghai, as well as on shortwave services of the KMT's Central Radio. FEBC's radio ministry was in close cooperation with the CIM and other Christian missions. Photo taken August, 1946.

A chaplain, Arvid was stationed in the Philippines at the end of WWII, and assisted John Broger in matters relating to the establishment of FEBC's new enterprise in that country. He was willing to return to the USA, raise his support and return to Manila with his family to help prepare the Karuhatan site for construction of the radio stations. The photo is reproduced in the December 1946 edition of the Far East Broadcaster along with further details.

A 1946 FEBC "Basic Brochure". This side of the publication contains an endorsement from "First Mate Bob" of the Haven of Rest radio program.   Dr. Robert H. Bowman, one of the founders of FEBC, was a member of the original Haven of Rest quartet, a broadcast heard nationally in the U.S. by network from about 1934. The generosity of Haven of Rest to provide this endorsement to be mailed to its own mailing list was, and still is, unparalleled. The opposite side of this document is in the Photo Archive as #62.

"Gospel and Song" was a Christian radio program produced at the Calvary Assembly church in Inglewoood, California. As can be noted in the text, the program had started in 1933-34, under the leadership of Robert Bowman, and William J. Roberts, pastor of the church. Both of these men, were, of course two of the three original members of the FEBC Founding Executive Committee. It was from this radio effort and the Haven of Rest radio program [See #63] that Dr. Bowman had gathered his radio experience and his belief in its power to reach people. It was also the principle means by which people across American learned about the new radio venture called Far East Broadcasting Company. (Note: Ralph Carmichael, the well-known composer/conductor eventually took over the musical responsibilities for this program.

In the early years, this symbol appeared on the Basic Brochures, with the purpose of illustrating what was called "United Effort" of "RADIO STATIONS,""MISSIONARY EFFORT "and " HOMEFRONT COOPERATION." The symbol is reminiscent of the 300 foot tower at Manila, although that tower would not be purchased for another four years. "Jesus Saves" signs in neon were common in the U.S. in the 1930's and '40's on church buildings.

Tony graduated from the College of Electrical Engineering in the Central University of China in Chungking in 1945, and was already serving Christian broadcasting in China at Grace Church's studio. Mr. and Mrs. James Hudson Taylor II, head of the Northwest Bible Institute, Shensi Province. The Taylors, Free Methodists, were instrumental in helping John Broger form the leadership team of the China Christian Broadcasting System (CCBS). Mr. Taylor provided a major article on the formation of the CCBS in the Far East Broadcaster publication, September, 1946 (Photo of Taylors). Mr. Taylor was grandson of the famed Hudson Taylor, founder of the China Inland Mission.

John and Dorothy Broger stand beside the S.S. Lane Victory. John is about to leave for a journey to China and points beyond, in search of opportunities for broadcasting the gospel. The May 1946 Far East Broadcaster gives account of the departure, and reports that John arrived in Shanghai on April 17 (1947). The Lane Victory was one of thousands of "Victory" and "Liberty" freighters operated by the merchant marine during WWII. As of 2008, this ship was still operational out of San Pedro, California, preserved as a WWII monument.

Robert and Eleanor Bowman, and John and Dorothy Broger pose beside their vehicle while on a "deputation" tour to raise funds for the new FEBC endeavor. In the first days of FEBC, funds had to be raised on the basis of their shared vision, since no actual radio stations or broadcasting yet existed. Churches eagerly made appointments to hear the FEBC story because of the fame of Robert Bowman as a singer and speaker on the Haven of Rest radio program, and because of a surge of interest in missionary evangelism following World War 2. See #1932 for a newspaper clipping advertising their appearance in a church in Modesto (California), probably on this same 1946 trip.
