A 1946 FEBC "Basic Brochure". This side of the publication contains an endorsement from "First Mate Bob" of the Haven of Rest radio program.   Dr. Robert H. Bowman, one of the founders of FEBC, was a member of the original Haven of Rest quartet, a broadcast heard nationally in the U.S. by network from about 1934. The generosity of Haven of Rest to provide this endorsement to be mailed to its own mailing list was, and still is, unparalleled. The opposite side of this document is in the Photo Archive as #62.

"Gospel and Song" was a Christian radio program produced at the Calvary Assembly church in Inglewoood, California. As can be noted in the text, the program had started in 1933-34, under the leadership of Robert Bowman, and William J. Roberts, pastor of the church. Both of these men, were, of course two of the three original members of the FEBC Founding Executive Committee. It was from this radio effort and the Haven of Rest radio program [See #63] that Dr. Bowman had gathered his radio experience and his belief in its power to reach people. It was also the principle means by which people across American learned about the new radio venture called Far East Broadcasting Company. (Note: Ralph Carmichael, the well-known composer/conductor eventually took over the musical responsibilities for this program.

The Veidmarks The Arvid Veidmarks were the first missionaries to join FEBC. Their job was to prepare the 12.5 acre site at Karuhatan (Valenzuela) about 2 miles north of the city limits of Manila. The tool of choice was this "JeepDozer" that Arvid used to clear the site in readiness for the construction of housing. The Veidmarks at first lived in U.S. Army housing, before moving to Karuhatan in May of 1947. The jeep was purchased in California (where the photo was taken prior to departure.

In early 1947, FEBC launched a radio program for release in North America called "The Call of the Orient." Its purpose was to heighten awareness of the new radio organization. Its method was to find radio stations throughout America that would air the program on a sustaining basis. The program featured missionary stories, gospel messages, as well as music. The photograph shows Ralph Carmichael directing the FEBC orchestra while on the left Robert Bowman and John Broger wait for their cues. The initial recordings were made in a Los Angeles Cumberland Presbyterian church hall.

In the early years, this symbol appeared on the Basic Brochures, with the purpose of illustrating what was called "United Effort" of "RADIO STATIONS,""MISSIONARY EFFORT "and " HOMEFRONT COOPERATION." The symbol is reminiscent of the 300 foot tower at Manila, although that tower would not be purchased for another four years. "Jesus Saves" signs in neon were common in the U.S. in the 1930's and '40's on church buildings.

A view down "Radio Road" to KGEI on the San Francisco Peninsula (Redwood City). The KGEI building is barely visible as the smaller, brown building aligned with the power poles. On the left is the local NBC station KNBR with its 300 and 550 foot AM towers. To the left of the larger KNBR building three of the KGEI shortwave towers are visible. By 1995, this entire region had been developed.

Looking to the northeast. Feed elements, radiator and towers of various KGEI antennas. The three towers in the background are 125 foot self-sustaining towers originally installed by GE after the 1939 Golden Gate Exposition on Treasure Island. They supported curtain antennas for 19, 25 and 49mb until demolished in the late 1990's. San Francisco Bay lies on the other side of the far dike.
