Page 1 of a report made by John Broger in 1947. The report itself is undated, but by examining the text it appears to be mid-1947, and is an excellent account of the progress FEBC made in establishing itself in the early days.

The text of page 1 is as follows:

SPECIAL REPORT

We have desired for several months to inform you of the latest developments in the FEBCo It is our intention to send to you at regular periods this report which is a personal up-to-date account of FEBC activity. We trust that it will be interesting to you and will provide many answers to questions which are asked you concerning FEBC. The Lord has wonderfully blessed in the year and a half of our organization and association, and it has become increasingly evident that He is working in strange and wonderful ways to further the radio missionary vision of the Orients The work has grown to such proportions that we lay out before you several of the major developments in this report.

OFFICE PERSONNEL

The office staff consists at present of six members, including Mr. Richard Bronson as office Manager, his secretary, Miss Jean Dykeman, Brother Bob Bowman, Mrs. Broger and myself. Mr. Frank Jones, a retired civil engineer, is graciously assisting, without remuneration, in making addressograph plates for us. The Lord has wonderfully supplied new offices at 304 South Ardmore, Los Angeles, which greatly increases the efficiency of the staff.

"CALL OF THE ORIENT" RADIO BROADCAST (Described in April "Broadcaster"

We have felt for sometime that a radio voice of FEBC was necessary for America, However, it has not been our intention that funds should be diverted into this ministry, As we have waited upon the Lord the project has progressed as various Christian musicians...[continued in 1226]

have been interested in having a part in such a broadcast. As you may have noted in the April "Broadcaster" the "Call of the Orient" is being released over various stations in the United States and is either on sustained time or on regular Christian broadcasts which donate a part of their time to the "Call of the Orient". We are very thankful that. God has supplied us with such an able director of the FEBC orchestra as Mr. Ralph Carmichael. It is expected from present contacts that the "Call of the Orient" will be released over some 22 stations in various parts of the United States. It will be a weekly feature.

MISSION MUSIC

You may also have noticed in the April "Broadcaster" the introduction of "Mission Music". This organization is under direction of the FEBC and profits realized will provide a special fund for FEBC radio missionary transportation to and from the Orient. From time to time "Mission Music" will release a variety of Christian records in the nature of solos, duets,, instrumental music, etc., Further details may be noted in the April "Broadcaster.

TRANSMITTERS

Mr. Clarence Moore, former Chief Engineer of HCJB in Quito, Ecuador, and at present Chief Engineer of International Radio and Electronic Corporation of Elkhart, Indiana, has been working an our transmitters since October 1946. The franchise from the Philippine government grants the FEBC permission to erect two 10,000 watt transmitters with frequency assignments of 680 kilocycles, 6030 kilocycles (49.75 meters), 9610 kilocycles (3122 meters), 11,855 kilocycles (25.31 meters). At the present time the plans for the transmitters are such that each transmitter shall be band-switching in order to cover any one of the four frequencies. In addition a one kilowatt transmitter, which will be used also as a stand-by transmitter with gasoline powered generator, will have additional frequencies available on the amateur 20 meter, 40 meter, and 80 meter bands Also this one kilowatt transmitter may have a final stage which will make it possible to operate at 10 kilowatts. The second transmitter which will be built as a 10 kilowatt transmitter, we are hoping by the grace of God, to increase to 25 kilowatts. Since the first of February Mr. Richard Rowland, our first FEBC engineer has been with Mr. Boors in Elkhart assisting in the construction of the transmitters. Within the next few days of this writing, Mr. and Mrs Richard Handlos and their daughter will also be on their way to join Mr. Moore in Elkhart. [continued in 1227]

Mr. Handlos for many years has been connected in various radio engineering enterprises, and we praise God for his consecration to the work of the Lord,, and for his willingness to assist In this radio missionary work. Both Mr, Rowland and Mr. Handlos will be engineers on the stations in the Philippines.

PROPERTY IN THE PHILIPPINES

At our last meeting of the Board, soon after my return from the Philippines and China,. I was able to inform: you of the miracle of God in supplying us with 12-1/2 acres of property just outside of the city limits of Manila. Mr. Arvid Veidmark, a former Chaplain in the United States Army who who was with me in the Philippines when negotiating with the government, consented upon his release from the army to go back to the Philippines with his wife and family to begin construction of missionary housing, broadcast studios, and transmitter buildings on the property. Mr. Veidmark and family arrived in Manila April 9, 1947, and already have taken the first steps in laying the plans for the necessary construction. They will be living in a Filipino house which was already located on the property. Mr. Robert Walton, a Christian business man located in Manila, is assisting in the construction of the station. Mr. and Mrs.. Kenneth Short, missionaries in Borneo, will be leaving immediately to join the Veidmarks in Manila. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Huston and family may also be leaving for Manila soon to join the Veidmarks. The assignment of the Shorts and the Hustons to the FEBC staff will be explained a latter portion of the report.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF EVANGELICALS CONVENTION

It was our privilege to be invited to attend the NAE convention.on April 14th through the 17th at Omaha, Nebraska, Present the work of the FEBC at the "Missionary Highlights Hour" on the opening day of the convention. A few weeks previously we had joined the Evangelical Foreign Missions Association (EFMA), and it was at the invitation of Mr. Clyde Taylor that we were able to present the FEBC. The response by the various Foreign Mission Boards attending the convention were most gratifying. We had the opportunity of presenting the aims, policies, and desire of the FEBC to cooperate with the various evangelical Mission Boards, to almost every .board director personally. We are offering to the evangelical Foreign ,Mission Boards the opportunity of assign missionaries to the FEBC staff, who will retain their own mission board appointment, but in addition will be appointed by the FEBC as radio missionaries, They will be supported as under ordinary conditions by their boards, but will have the opportunity to enlarge their ministry by means of the FEBC stations. Generally it will be the policy that the missionary will spend approximately one half of his term at the FEBC station broadcasting in the language of his people to...[continued in 1228]

his particular country, and the latter portion of his term in the field of his call reaping the harvest of the broadcasting ministry. Also while attending the NAE convention, the FEBC joined the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB). This organization represents the broadcasting division of the NAE. We feel that the unity and representation of Christian broadcasters will be greatly enhanced by this organization, and that our association in it will assist not only in the furtherance of this unity, but in our common aim to preach .the gospel in all the world, The NRB conducted a survey of various Christian broadcasts which had submitted audition platters. The "Call of the Orient" won the "Churchill Award" as the most outstanding program in novel technique. The winning of this award gave us further opportunity to present the FEBC and opened many outlets in various parts of the nation for the "Call of the Orient".

COOPERATING GROUPS

(1) The Christ Ambassador "Speed the Light" campaign has designated the FEB. as one of the outlets in its program to spread the gospel by the fastest means possible to the ands of-the earth. The Christ Ambassadors have taken on as their first project the supplying of funds to build the first one kilowatt FEBC transmitter, Also the Christ’s Ambassadors Department in conjunction with the. Foreign Missions Department of Assemblies of God have assigned Mr. & Mrs, Kenneth Short to the staff of the FEB.. The experience of this couple in the Dutch East Indies, and their natural abilities will make theca a valuable asset to the FEBC staff.

(2) The Christian Couriers, a group of churches in Iowa, headed by Rev. W. J. Stevens, is ready to assign Mr. & Mrs. Frank Huston to the staff of the FEBC. Brother Euston for many years has been in the construction business as contractor and carpenter. At this waiting he is making application for his passports, and God willing will soon be enroute with his family to Manila.

CHINA

The complete transcription equipment for the studio in Shanghai arrived safely with Dick Hillis of the China Inland Mission. By this time the studio is very likely set up and in operation. "Soundcasting" has continued in Shanghai under the directorship of Pastor Charles Chi and Niu Chang Teh. "Soundcasting" is simply the use of public address systems which give out the Word at various places of public congestion, such as street car stations and market places.

The Lord has opened the way for a broadcast each Sunday morning from eight to nine o’clock over the Ginling station,...[Continued in 1229]

REGIONAL DIRECTOR

Mr. Floyd Hitchcock of Springfield, Missouri, editor of the "Gospel Messenger" and director of the "Faith of our Fathers" Broadcasts has been appointed as Regional Director representing the FEBC in the middle west states. Mr. Hitchcock was a missionary in Japan for seven years under the Oriental Missionary Society, and has been largely instrumental in fostering FEBC Interest in the middle west by means of his broadcast and publication.

FEBC TIME TABLE

It is expected that the two transmitters will be completed sometime in the fall of 1947 and possibly installed in the Philippines during the early part of the year of 1948. This time table may be expected if progress is not hindered in any way. The prime factors necessary to the keeping of this schedule involve the obtaining of building materials in the Philippines in order that construction and housing may continue; also that the necessary equipment for the building of the transmitters and the various associated studio equipment may be available. The steel for constructing the antenna towers must be purchased within the next several months in order that they may be sent on before hand to Manila and erected.

Even though we will face many problems in procurement of-materials, we will face the financial need in our budget for these items of approximately $60,000.00 from this time to the said of the year. We have perfect confidence that God will supply the need as it is His will for the work to proceed, We are simply endeavoring to be as faithful in stewardship energy, and time as it is possible in order that nothing shall hinder in the carrying out of this project. We trust that you will continue to pray with us that the forward advance shall continue in order that the many millions who perhaps will never be reached otherwise might know of this glorious gospel of salvation. We trust that this report is such that you may be able to pray intelligently and represent our needs before the throne of grace in your devotions. [Continued in 1230]

Postal cover. February 25, 1947. Undoubtedly the envelope contained information on the C.C.B.S. broadcasts, the first of which began on February 9. The reverse of the envelope demonstrates that an airmail letter from Shanghai to Los Angeles took about ten days, the same time it took for letters to cross the Pacific from Manila. This lag was the standard for several decades hence, forcing the use of the quite unreliable telephone in case of emergencies. Nothing can be learned about the Sincere Mercantile Company, Ltd.

Envelope (Postal cover) dated May 25, which contained a letter from Arvid Veidmark to the office in Los Angeles. Arvid and family reached Manila April 8, 1947, and lived for a while in Manila proper before settling in at CRCM on May 2. This envelope crosses out the "Azcarraga" address and refers to "Penn." This is no doubt because there was no mail delivery to CRCM address in Karuhatan. Of Philatelic interest is the use of both Philippine Republic and American Commonwealth stamps. One peso was worth US 0.50 at that time. The Philippines received its independence from the United States in 1946.

English plaque on Shanghai Grace Church. The church was, in pre-PRC days, [Southern] "Baptist." The denominational word was apparently dropped when it came under the TSPM and served as a "public" church. More modern plaques in Chinese, however, seem to have reinstated it. A letter sent from Grace's radio technician to John Broger in 1947 uses the address of "375 Seymour Rd," its pre-PRC name. (See #00164).
