DZAS tower under construction in 1950. Close examination of this transparency reveals that the construction boom is severely twisted, and a nearby tower girder is bent. On May 9 of this year, at the 75 foot level, the collapsing boom narrowly missed Byrd Brunemier, hitting a plank on which he was standing. Unfortunately, the boom rebounded, delivering a fatal blow to hired rigger Matring de Leon.

In early 1948 equipment began to arrive from the U.S. It was delivered from the Manila docks and stored in the partially completed KZAS transmitter building. The challenge would be to complete both building and hook up the transmitter by June 8.

A rare view of a KZAS sign at the front gate of CRCM. Almost immediately after station inauguration in June of 1948, the call sign was changed to DZAS. There are in fact, few photographs or other printed materials preserved with the "KZAS" call sign. The "Far East" in white paint or chalk suggests an initial sign for delivery of goods. The pouring of foundations, like virtually everything else in the CRCM development, was done without the benefit of modern construction equipment such as concrete truck delivery or pumps. Note the use of wartime aircraft landing strip sections as reinforcement. To see how the sand and gravel were acquired, see #963 and 964.

Building materials were not readily available to FEBC immediately after World War II, since virtually all such resources were being used in the reconstruction of Manila. Here the FEBC "JeepDozer" pushes sand and gravel up onto the shore where it is shoveled by hand into trucks to take to CRCM. See also #962 and 964.

Richard Handlos (left) and a local worker look on as Richard Rowland tries his hand at soldering. The copper pipes were used for conducting high voltage electricity and/or water for cooling transmitter vacuum tubes. Hot water in the residences was not available for many decades, and then, only by means of small in-line electric heaters.

Unidentified staff hold an "artist's conception" of the CRCM administration building. The transparency itself is marked "1949." The actual date of the drawing is put at late 1947 or early 1948 because 1)the first building was started in the first half if 1948 and 2)"KZAS" was the original call sign, used only in 1948. See #321 for a closeup of the plan. See #324 for a view of the completed complex.

In early 1949 the second wing of the administration building at CRCM was constructed. Since the initial construction, rain and some landscaping has improved the site dramatically (compare with #960). The site was apparently an orchard, which was sorely neglected during the War. FEBC rehabilitated as many trees as possible.
