Here the Bowman family prepares to leave for the U.S., among the first to travel across the Pacific by air. It was still the custom for staff to go to the airport and see them off. Pan Am utilized Boeing Stratocruiser aircraft, four engine double-deckers, which were in fact modified B-29s. The airplanes were noisy, and required 36 hours to arrive on the West Coast of the U.S., with stops in Guam, Wake and Honolulu.
